Mr. Reid’s Interview

by Katherine Geonzon

Why did you choose to be a teacher?

I chose to be a teacher because I value the role of education in society. I was not a good student so I knew how difficult it could be for others. I wanted to make an impact for
individuals and a society as a whole, so I got into the field of education.

What high school and college did you go to?

I went to Niles North High School and then Illinois State University.

What is your favorite thing about teaching?

My favorite thing about teaching is getting to know the students and discussing current events or controversial issues.

How do you keep your students motivated?

I like to keep my students motivated by giving them a voice and choice in what they are learning. Providing options and doing different types of activities such as discussions, simulations, and debates keeps the classroom from becoming a boring note-taking station.

What would you want your students to take away from you?

I want my students to become more informed individuals and critical consumers of information. I want them to be comfortable voicing opinions and labeling bias.

What parts of being a teacher do you find most challenging?

The most challenging aspect of being a teacher is making sure that every student is getting the education they deserve. All students learn differently and benefit from certain techniques or types of learning. Making sure that you can accommodate every student and their unique way of learning can be a challenge when it comes to 20-30 separate people.

How would you describe Ridgewood in one word?

Are you an introvert or extrovert?

Weird mix of both. I used to be as extroverted as possible growing up all throughout college. However, I am making a transition to more of an introvert as I age.

What color of the rainbow would you be?

If you had a warning label, what would it be?

Caution: Extreme sarcasm

How old were you when you found out that Santa Claus wasn’t real? How did you find out?

9 years old. Found my hidden presents in the laundry room.

What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever eaten?

Tough question. If it sounds too weird or gross I probably wouldn’t try it.

Who would you want to play you in a movie of your life?

Jason Segel. He’s funny, talented, and I’m a huge HIMYM fan.

Do you collect anything?

Last year I bought one of those U.S. maps for the quarters. I’m trying to get all the states.

What’s your favorite holiday?

New Year’s Eve or St. Patrick’s Day. Can’t choose one!

If you could have a superpower, what would your superpower be? Why?

I would choose the ability to read other’s minds because I just think that would be cool to do. Not sure if that would translate to animals as well.

Do you prefer white or colored socks?

White socks.

What’s your biggest goal for yourself?

My biggest goal would be to win a high school basketball title as a head coach.
