Finding Your Christmas Spirit
By: Mia Triantafillou
It’s the most wonderful time of the year, but what makes it so wonderful? If aliens were to come to planet Earth anytime during the month of December, they would probably be taken aback be the vicious consumerism, continuous overeating, and repetitive music selections that have all become inevitable pitfalls of the Christmas season. So how can we avoid turning such a special holiday into a time of finding good sales, stuffing your face, and driving yourself crazy with holly jolly tunes? Here’s some tips to keep your Christmas Spirit high during the Bah Humbugs of the holiday season…
“There was a time when I was alone, nowhere to go and no place to call home / My only friend was the man in the moon and even sometimes he would go away, too.”
~ Ruth B. — Lost Boy ~
Imagine posting a video on YouTube one afternoon and within a few weeks receiving nearly nine-million views! Well this was the case for 20-year-old Canadian singer / song writer Ruth B. Ever since she was just a little girl, Ruth B. adored music and anything music-related. She played the piano, sang songs, and loved to read and write stories. As years went by, Ruth B. allowed her musical talent to grow and develop by following her heart and stepping out of her comfort zone. She was always open to change and willing to take risks and try new things. Thanks to her ambition and open mind, Ruth B. discovered the app Vine, and immediately began to post short, six second clips of her singing well-known songs. Day after day, she got more and more followers. Within no time, she had thousands of followers and fans supporting her. Never in a million years would she have thought that simple six second videos could take her so far. Still and all, Ruth B. continues to build upon her success to this day, by pursuing her love for music, staying in touch with her fans, and creating songs of her own. Among many of Ruth B.’s very own songs is Lost Boy, which has recently made its way into the TOP 5 on iTunes. However, Ruth B., an ambitious, dedicated, and colorful young adult, has merely begun her musical journey, so make sure to check her out and fall in love with her yourself.
Alessia Cara Know-It-All Tour Pt. II
by Samantha Arroyo
At only 18, pop singer Alessia Cara became a hit when her debut single ‘Here’ was released. Now at 20 years old, Alessia Cara is already on her second leg of the Know-It-All Tour with fellow pop singer Nathan Sykes and singer/songwriter Ruth B. On October 7th, 2016, my friend and I were dropped off at the Chicago Theatre only moments before the concert officially kicked off that night. Feeling hungry, the two of us purchased some popcorn, found our seats, and waited for the concert to begin.
The lights in the theatre began to dim, the audience quickly found their seats and quieted down, the stage lights began to change color, and then appeared the first performer of the night, Nathan Sykes. He performed songs such as ‘Kiss Me Quick,’ ‘Give It Up,’ and ‘Over and Over Again.’ Sykes even performed his latest release, ‘Famous’ while beautifully playing the piano at the same time. Nathan Sykes was only a crowd warmer though. After a short intermission, Ruth B. came onto the stage and the audience only grew louder. She sang multiple new songs and songs from her EP, The Intro, including ‘Lost Boy’ and ‘Superficial Love’ (and I am not embarrassed to say that I sang along with and danced to). When Ruth B. left the stage the audience began to stand up, they walked around, went to the bathroom, got food, and etc. It was only a matter of time before Alessia Cara walked onto the stage.
